The best time of year has officially arrived – berry cherry season!!! Seriously who doesn’t love these little bursts of flavour and happiness!?!??! The colour alone speaks so much for their nutrition – fruits and vegetables rich in colour are some of the highest in anthocyanins – these guys are the super potent antioxidants made to knock down free radicals when they attempt to attack our cells. Cherries are also a lovely source of the phytochemical melatonin which aids our sleep. Sign me up to better quality of sleep any time thanks.

We need to make the most of these fruits when they’re in season which is over the summer months. Word through the cherry farmers is that it’s been a tricky season for their picking and thus prices of cherries are slightly higher as a result. Whilst I know an increase in price can often be off putting for consumers, let’s consider what we are doing for our local farmers when we continue to support their business through tough seasons yes? Think about how much you spend each day on a coffee, treat, glass of wine etc and compare that to a tiny percentage increase in your fresh food. When you do that it’s not much is it? Not only are we supporting the local farmers in doing so, we’re boosting our health and you simply cannot put a price on that.

These gorgeous cherries were sent over our way by the lovely people at Cherry Hill Orchard in Victoria which is one of Victoria’s largest pick your own cherry orchards. Cherryhill, set high in the scenic hills overlooking the Yarra Valley. They grow only the best and sweetest varieties, so cherry lovers can be assured of only the largest and tastiest fruit throughout the season. Cherry picking is a great day out and perfect summer holiday activity. It’s an ideal activity for kids, so they can learn about where food comes from – and what’s better than eating fresh, sweet cherries straight from the tree?

Cherry Hill are open from 10th December to early January, 7 days a week from 9-5pm with live music on the weekend too.
